What picture does the word ‘Goddess’ paint?
A deity, a gorgeous beauty or an altruistic saint?
A woman who goes beyond the call of duty, expecting no reward in return,
Who acts as a guiding light through life’s every turn.

Divinities are worshipped as women of power and might,
Who can change fortunes if pleased right!
Praying to whom is believed to uplift your life,
Grant every desire and freedom from strife.

Or maybe a vision of breath taking beauty,
A symbol of dignity and purity.
Courage and conviction personified,
The world watches her every stride.

A selfless, compassionate soul,
Whose mission is to make broken lives whole.
Who gives up her life for others,
Countless sacrifices without any bother.

What about women in our everyday lives?
Mothers, daughters, friends, colleagues, sisters and wives!
Every woman has some ‘Goddess’ like quality,
It’s for the beholder to appreciate beyond what the eye can see.

She could be fat and not very tall,
Have a face furthest from the prettiest doll!
Yet she is a ‘Goddess’ for with courage her dreams she’ll pursue,
Regardless of the difficulties along the journey that ensue.

She only wants safety, respect and not to be revered,
Freedom to do what she wants and her voice to be heard.
She’s a normal person just like you,
Who loves her life and the million ways she thinks she’s a ‘Goddess’ too!

So women- let’s worship and celebrate the ‘Goddess’ within,
Men- not respecting and not being thankful for the ‘Goddesses’ in your everyday lives is your biggest sin!

Eulogy for my Grandmother (Nani)

One of the hardest things a person has to do in life is write and give an eulogy on the passing away of a loved one. Last week, my Nani left for her heavenly abode and today was the prayer meeting on the Chautha (4th Day).

I'm sharing with all of you the eulogy in the form of a poem I wrote last night for her on behalf of all her grandchildren. I share this here because paying tribute to a dear one and speaking to a packed room full of people, while keeping your emotions in check is not easy, however is inevitable.

Thank you so much for joining us in prayer this afternoon to pay homage to our beloved Nirmal Khanna. A mother is more precious than any other person. A grandmother, being a mother twice over, is closest to her grandchildren. On behalf of her grandchildren whom she adored: Ujjwal, Kamakshi, Dhruv, Akshiena and Vyomi, this poem is dedicated to our iron lady with a will of steel.

My metamorphosis into a bun maska...

My heart leaped with elation When I read- Cafeteria announces the launch of a bun maska station    Now I could have my favourite snack Any time round the clock without holding back
Long winding lines at the chaiwala Seemed to attest that I was not the only one who thought so So light and fluffy, melt in the mouth! Is one ever enough? Umm no!   Can be gobbled up in a jiffy No mess, a time save, really quick and spiffy  Not one but  four versions to choose from Eat to your hearts content without any qualm     Bun with butter, extra cheese, and if you have a sweet tooth, there's jam  Accompanied with a hot cup of  sweet tea,  Anything better can there be?
Then one night in my dream Appeared  my super  thin calorie conscious friend who  thinks she's  supreme   I was as usual gobbling away to glory When  she began to bore me with  her  calorie story
150 calories in a plain bun  A spoon/  cube of butter only another 100  Making a normal one 250 cal  An irresistible slice of cheese ap…
